For many people, faith is not one part of life among others. It is how they make sense of everything else, including what is hurting. When anxiety, grief or a hard season arrives, they want a counsellor who understands that faith matters and knows how to make room for it.
At our Kitchener office, Christian counselling brings Scripture and prayer into therapy alongside proven clinical approaches, for clients who want their faith woven into their healing. You decide how much of your faith is part of the work, and how.
People come to Christian counselling for many of the same reasons anyone seeks therapy, with the added wish that their faith be part of the conversation. You might be:
Christian counselling at GreenValley is grounded in the same evidence-based methods used across the practice, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)-informed skills for managing difficult thoughts and emotions. What changes is that your faith is welcomed as a source of strength, meaning and hope.
Depending on what you want, sessions may include prayer, reflection on Scripture, or exploring how your beliefs connect with what you are experiencing. Some clients want faith at the centre of every session; others want it present in the background. Your counsellor will ask rather than assume, and will not tell you what to believe.
Faith communities can be places of deep belonging. They can also, sometimes, be places of real hurt: being judged, excluded, pressured, or let down by people you trusted. That kind of pain can be hard to talk about with others in your church, and hard to talk about with someone who does not understand why faith still matters to you.
Christian counselling offers a space to work through that hurt at your own pace, whether you are hoping to heal your relationship with your faith community, step back from it, or simply understand what happened.
Many Christian parents want a counsellor who will respect their family’s faith while helping their child through anxiety, big emotions, grief or a difficult change. We work alongside parents, honouring the values you are raising your children with, while giving your child or teen their own space to be heard.
For younger children, we use play therapy, the natural language of childhood. With the agreement of both parents and child, faith can also be part of sessions, including prayer. For teens, faith is part of the conversation to the extent they want it to be, since many young people are working out what they believe for themselves. Parents are kept involved in ways that protect the trust a teen needs in order to open up.
When you contact our Kitchener office, one of our client care coordinators will listen to what you are looking for, including how you would like faith included, and help match you with the right therapist. Most clients book a first appointment directly. If you are not quite sure, a free introductory call with Susan or Heidi is available.
Your first session includes some history-taking along with talking about what brings you in now. It is also a good time to tell Susan or Heidi how you would like faith to be part of your sessions.
Our Kitchener office is on the second floor, with free parking right beside the building. The office has its own private waiting area attached to the therapy room, so you are unlikely to see other clients when you arrive. Simply come up, have a seat, and your counsellor will greet you at the time of your appointment.

Yes. Working through hurt from a faith community is something GreenValley offers specifically, wherever you currently stand with your faith.
Yes. If your church or organization participates in Shalem’s Counselling Assistance Program, contact Shalem to confirm your eligibility, then let our coordinators know when you book. GreenValley invoices the CAP program directly for your counselling sessions.
Susan and Heidi are both registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. If you are using an extended health benefits plan through your employer, payment is due at the time of your session and you will receive a receipt to submit to your insurer; coverage depends on your own plan, so please check with them first. We also work with some third-party programs, including Shalem CAP and certain Employee Assistance Programs, which are billed directly — our coordinators can tell you more when you reach out.
That is completely fine. Our Kitchener team offers counselling that does not include faith, and our coordinators can help you find the right fit.
