Anxiety has a way of making ordinary things feel enormous. The email you cannot bring yourself to open, the social plan you cancel at the last minute, the 3 a.m. replay of a conversation from last Tuesday. If worry has started shaping your decisions rather than informing them, you are not alone, and you do not have to manage it by willpower. At GreenValley Counselling Services in Cambridge, we offer anxiety counselling that treats the roots of anxiety, not just the symptoms.

What Anxiety Can Look Like

Anxiety is not always obvious, even to the person living with it. It might show up as:

  • Persistent worry that feels difficult to switch off
  • Physical symptoms — racing heart, shortness of breath, tension, or stomach upset
  • Trouble falling asleep, or waking early with your mind already going
  • Avoiding situations, conversations, or places that feel risky
  • Irritability or a short fuse that does not match the situation
  • Difficulty concentrating, or a mind that goes blank under pressure
  • Perfectionism and procrastination, which often travel together
  • Panic attacks that arrive without obvious warning

Anxiety exists for a reason — it is the mind trying to protect you from something. Therapy helps you understand what it is protecting you from, and build a different relationship with it.

How We Approach Anxiety in Cambridge

There is no single correct treatment for anxiety, and the right approach depends on where yours comes from. At our Cambridge office we draw on several, often in combination:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — the most researched approach for anxiety. CBT helps you identify the thought patterns that fuel worry and build practical, repeatable skills for interrupting them.
  • CBT with DBT-informed techniques — for anxiety that arrives fast and physically, DBT skills add distress tolerance and grounding: what to do in the moment, not just how to think differently afterward.
  • EMDR — when anxiety has roots in trauma or a specific distressing experience, EMDR helps the brain reprocess the memory so it stops triggering the alarm response.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) — IFS treats anxiety not as a defect to eliminate but as a part of you doing a job. Understanding what that part is protecting often loosens its grip more effectively than fighting it.

We will talk through which approach fits your situation rather than fitting you to a method.

What to Expect

Getting started begins with a quick conversation with one of our client care coordinators, who will listen to what you’re looking for and match you with a therapist who fits. From there you can book a session directly, or, if you’d prefer, arrange a free introductory call with the therapist first — whichever feels more comfortable.

In your first sessions, we will map out where your anxiety shows up, what feeds it, and what you have already tried. From there, the work is collaborative and paced to you — building skills you can use between sessions, not just insight you have in them. Many people notice a shift within the first several sessions, though how long the work takes depends on what is underneath the anxiety.

There’s no shared waiting room at our Cambridge office. You’ll come up to the hall outside our office door, where there’s seating, and your therapist will meet you at your appointment time. It’s a quieter arrival than a clinic waiting area — the hall is shared with the other offices in the building, so you may occasionally pass someone, but you won’t be sitting in a room full of other clients.
