Trauma isn’t only what happened — it’s what keeps happening inside you long after the event is over. It can surface as anxiety that won’t settle, a body that’s always braced, difficulty trusting, numbness, or memories that arrive uninvited. Whether it comes from a single event or years of hard experience, trauma can be worked through, and you don’t have to do it alone. At GreenValley Counselling Services in Cambridge, we offer trauma therapy for adults, teens, and children, grounded in approaches that prioritise safety, choice, and moving at a pace that keeps you steady.

What Trauma Can Look Like

Trauma lives in the body and mind in ways that aren’t always obvious, even to the person carrying it. You might recognise:

  • Anxiety, or a sense of always being braced for something
  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
  • Avoiding people, places, or reminders of what happened
  • Feeling numb, flat, or disconnected from the people around you
  • Trouble trusting, or feeling safe in relationships
  • Difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or settling your emotions
  • Being easily startled, or physically tense much of the time
  • A sense that the past hasn’t quite stayed in the past

None of this is weakness or overreaction — it’s a nervous system that learned to protect you and hasn’t yet been told the danger has passed. Therapy helps it learn.

How We Approach Trauma in Cambridge

There’s no single right way through trauma — the best path depends on you, your history, and what you’re ready for. At our Cambridge office we draw on:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) — a well-researched approach that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their charge, delivered here by a therapist with over 30 years of clinical experience.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) — helps you understand the protective parts of yourself that formed around the trauma, and build a calmer, less conflicted relationship with them.
  • Approaches for children and teens — including Trauma-Focused CBT, child-centred play therapy, and music therapy, chosen to suit the child’s age and how they best express themselves.
  • A trauma-informed foundation — whatever the approach, we work at your pace and prioritise safety and choice, never pushing you to revisit more than you’re ready for.

Trauma Therapy for Children and Teen

Children and teens experience trauma too — from loss, medical events, frightening experiences, family disruption, or abuse — and younger children especially rarely have the words to explain what they’re carrying. Trauma-focused therapy for young people meets them where they are, using approaches designed for how they actually process and heal.

We draw on several approaches depending on the child’s age and needs:

  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) — one of the most researched and well-respected approaches for childhood and adolescent trauma, helping young people understand what happened, work through the feelings attached to it, and rebuild a sense of safety, with parents or caregivers involved along the way.
  • Child-centred play therapy — for younger children, who often process difficult experiences through play long before they can put them into words.
  • Music therapy — a way in for children and teens who connect and express more easily through music than conversation, and a gentle route to feelings that are hard to reach directly.

Our Child & Teen Trauma Therapists in Cambridge

What to Expect

Getting started begins with a quick conversation with one of our client care coordinators, who will listen to what you’re looking for and match you with a therapist who fits. From there you can book a session directly, or arrange a free introductory call first — whichever feels more comfortable. With trauma especially, we begin by building safety and trust; the work moves at your pace, never faster than feels manageable, and you stay in control of how and when you approach the difficult material.

There’s no shared waiting room at our Cambridge office. You’ll come up to the hall outside our office door, where there’s seating, and your therapist will meet you at your appointment time. It’s a quieter arrival than a clinic waiting area — the hall is shared with the other offices in the building, so you may occasionally pass someone, but you won’t be sitting in a room full of other clients.

Here is a walk up from our front door to one of our offices.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy in Cambridge

How do I know if what I'm dealing with is trauma?

Trauma isn’t measured by how “big” the event was — it’s about how your nervous system responded and whether those effects are still with you. If you’re living with intrusive memories, anxiety, avoidance, numbness, or a struggle to feel safe, trauma therapy can help, whatever the source.

That depends on the approach. IFS focuses on how the trauma has shaped your inner world rather than requiring you to recount the event. EMDR does bring the memory to mind, but always with your therapist keeping you steady and in control throughout — you decide the pace and how much you share.

EMDR is a well-established, well-researched trauma treatment that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional charge. At our Cambridge office it’s delivered by a therapist with over 30 years of experience.

Yes. We offer Trauma-Focused CBT — a well-researched, well-respected approach for childhood and adolescent trauma — designed for how young people actually process difficult experiences, with parents involved along the way.

Sessions at our Cambridge office are $170.  Many extended health plans cover therapy — it’s worth checking what your plan includes.

Healing From Trauma Is Possible

Trauma can feel like something you’ll always carry, but with the right support it can loosen its hold. When you’re ready, a short conversation with one of our client care coordinators is all it takes to get started — they’ll listen to what you’re looking for and match you with the right therapist.
