Depression is more than sadness, and it often arrives quietly. More often it’s a slow flattening — things that used to matter stop mattering, getting through the day takes everything you have, and you find yourself wondering when you last felt like yourself. If that’s where you are, you’re not failing at anything, and you’re not alone. At GreenValley Counselling Services in Cambridge, we offer depression counselling that helps you understand what’s underneath it and find your way back toward feeling like yourself again.

What Depression Can Look Like

Depression affects thoughts, body, and daily life, and it shows up differently for everyone. You might recognise:

  • Persistent low mood, emptiness, or a heaviness that doesn’t lift
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy
  • Fatigue, low energy, or feeling that everything takes effort
  • Changes in sleep or appetite — too much or too little of either
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or being a burden
  • Irritability or a shorter fuse than usual
  • Withdrawing from people, even ones you care about
  • Thoughts of self-harm or of not wanting to be here (if you’re experiencing this, please reach out for immediate help or call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, any time)

Depression is treatable. It can stem from many things — life events, loss, stress, brain chemistry, or no clear cause at all — and you don’t need to know the reason before getting help.

How We Approach Depression in Cambridge

There’s no single right treatment for depression, and the best approach depends on you. At our Cambridge office we draw on several, often in combination:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — helps you notice and shift the thought patterns that keep depression in place, and rebuild the small daily actions that low mood erodes.
  • CBT with DBT-informed techniques — adds skills for managing intense emotions, distress, and the days that feel unmanageable.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) — helps you understand the parts of yourself carrying the heaviness, and relate to them with less self-criticism, which often sits at the core of depression.
  • EMDR — when depression is connected to loss, trauma, or specific painful experiences, EMDR helps the brain reprocess what’s feeding it.

We’ll talk through what fits your situation rather than fitting you to a method.

What to Expect

Getting started begins with a quick conversation with one of our client care coordinators, who will listen to what you’re looking for and match you with a therapist who fits. From there you can book a session directly, or, if you’d prefer, arrange a free introductory call with the therapist first — whichever feels more comfortable. In your early sessions, we’ll get a picture of how depression is affecting you and what might be feeding it, then work at a pace that suits you — rebuilding energy and momentum gradually rather than all at once.

There’s no shared waiting room at our Cambridge office. You’ll come up to the hall outside our office door, where there’s seating, and your therapist will meet you at your appointment time. It’s a quieter arrival than a clinic waiting area — the hall is shared with the other offices in the building, so you may occasionally pass someone, but you won’t be sitting in a room full of other clients.

Here’s the walk from the front door to one of our upstairs offices.

FAQs about Depression Counselling

How do I know if I need therapy for depressionor if it's just a rough patch?

If low mood, loss of interest, or exhaustion has lasted more than a couple of weeks and is affecting your sleep, work, or relationships, it’s worth talking to someone — you don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable. A short conversation with one of our client care coordinators can help you figure out whether counselling is the right step.

There’s no single best approach — it depends on what’s driving your depression. At our Cambridge office we use CBT, DBT-informed skills, IFS, and EMDR, and your therapist will talk through which fits your situation. CBT is one of the most researched approaches for depression, but it isn’t the only effective one.

Sessions at our Cambridge office start at $170. Many extended health plans cover therapy — our team includes a Registered Social Worker and Registered Psychotherapists, so it’s worth checking what your plan covers.

No — you don’t need a referral to book counselling in Ontario. You can reach out to us directly to get started.

Many people notice a shift within the first several sessions, though it depends on what’s underneath the depression. Therapy works at a pace that suits you, rebuilding energy and momentum gradually rather than all at once.

You Don't Need to Feel This Way Forever

Depression responds well to treatment, and you don’t have to have it all figured out before you get in touch. A short conversation with one of our client care coordinators is enough to get started.
