DAY & EVENING, IN-PERSON & VIRTUAL
The teenage years are genuinely hard — and it can be difficult to tell ordinary ups and downs from something your teen actually needs help with. If they’ve become more withdrawn, more anxious, more irritable, or just not themselves, and the usual conversations aren’t reaching them, therapy can offer what a parent sometimes can’t: a neutral, confidential space with someone who isn’t a parent, a teacher, or a friend — just someone there to listen and help. At GreenValley Counselling Services in Cambridge, we work with teens in the way they actually respond — through talk, yes, but also through creative approaches that meet them where words alone fall short.
It can be hard to know when to step in. Consider therapy for your teen if you’re noticing:
None of these means something is wrong with your teen — it means they’re carrying something that’s currently bigger than their coping skills, which is exactly what therapy helps with.
Teens don’t always want to sit and talk, and they can spot a therapist who’s talking down to them in seconds. Our approach is honest, respectful, and paced to the individual. Depending on what your teen responds to, that might include:
We attune to what each teen needs rather than fitting them to a single method.
For older teens, Joel (Internal Family Systems) and Inge (over 30 years’ experience, EMDR) offer depth-oriented work suited to adolescents ready to go deeper. You can see the full team on our Cambridge office page.
The teenage brain is remarkably adaptable — which is exactly why this is such a powerful time for therapy. The coping skills and self-understanding a teen builds now can become lifelong tools, and research shows that support during adolescence can reduce anxiety and depression, strengthen self-esteem, and keep current struggles from becoming bigger ones in adulthood.
Getting started begins with a quick conversation with one of our client care coordinators, who will listen to what you’re looking for and match your teen with a therapist who fits. From there you can book a session directly, or arrange a free introductory call first — whichever feels more comfortable. We usually begin by understanding what’s going on and building trust; with teens, the relationship comes first, and the work follows from there. We’ll keep you appropriately informed as a parent while respecting the confidentiality that makes therapy feel safe for your teen.
There’s no shared waiting room at our Cambridge office. You’ll come up to the hall outside our office door, where there’s seating, and your therapist will meet you at your appointment time. It’s a quieter arrival than a clinic waiting area — the hall is shared with the other offices in the building, so you may occasionally pass someone, but you won’t be sitting in a room full of other clients.
Here’s a walk up from the front door of the building upstairs to one of our offices.
It can be hard to tell. A good rule of thumb: if changes in mood, behaviour, sleep, or school have lasted more than a couple of weeks and are affecting their daily life, it’s worth talking to someone. A quick conversation with one of our client care coordinators can help you decide whether therapy makes sense.
This is not uncommon, and it’s okay. Many teens warm up once they realise therapy is their space, not a place they’re being sent to be “fixed.” We focus on building trust first, and we offer approaches like music therapy for teens who find talking difficult. Sometimes starting with a low-pressure introductory call helps.
Confidentiality is what makes therapy feel safe for a teen, so we protect it — while keeping you appropriately informed as a parent. We’ll explain how this works at the start, and the only firm exception is if there’s a serious safety concern.
At our Cambridge office we offer CBT and DBT-informed skills, music therapy, and creative approaches, with depth-oriented work like IFS available for older teens. We match the approach to what each teen responds to rather than using one method for everyone.
Individual sessions at our Cambridge office are $170, and many extended health plans cover therapy. Our team includes a Registered Social Worker and Registered Psychotherapists, so it’s worth checking your coverage.
You don’t have to figure out whether it’s “serious enough” on your own. A short conversation with one of our client care coordinators is enough to get started, and we’ll help you find the right therapist for your teen.
