Types of Therapy for Teens

At GreenValley Counselling Services, we offer a variety of therapeutic approaches tailored to meet the unique needs of teenagers. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps teens identify and change negative thought patterns, while Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) focuses on building emotional regulation and interpersonal skills. We also offer creative approaches to help teens engage and express with they may have trouble verbalizing.  

Creative Therapy Approaches to Help Teens Engage in Therapy

Creative approaches like music therapy and art therapy offer teens innovative ways to engage and process their emotions in therapy. These modalities allow adolescents to express themselves non-verbally, which can be particularly effective for those who find it difficult to articulate their feelings. Music therapy harnesses the power of rhythm, melody, and lyrics to help teens explore their emotions and build coping skills, while art therapy provides a safe space for self-expression through drawing, painting, and other visual arts. Both approaches have been shown to enhance emotional resilience, reduce stress, and improve overall mental health, making them valuable tools in helping teens navigate their unique challenges.  Teens don’t need to be skilled at art or music to participate and benefit. 

Music Therapy for Teens

Music therapy uses the simple musical expression to help teens express and process their emotions, cope with stress, and build resilience. Through activities such as playing instruments, songwriting, and listening to music, teens can explore their feelings in a non-verbal and creative way. This therapeutic approach can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and enhance social skills by encouraging self-expression and connection. Guided by a trained music therapist, teens are able to use music as a tool for emotional healing and personal growth.

Art Therapy for Teens

Art therapy provides a creative outlet for teenagers to express their emotions and thoughts through various art forms such as drawing, painting, and sculpting. This therapeutic approach helps teens communicate feelings that might be difficult to verbalize, fostering a deeper understanding of their internal experiences. By engaging in the creative process, teens can explore and resolve emotional conflicts, develop problem-solving skills, and enhance self-esteem. Art is integrated into sessions are guided by a psychotherapist who help teens understand their creations and gain insights into their emotional well-being.
